How to split a wedding budget

For most couples, the venue and food take the biggest share, usually 40 to 50 percent. That's why guest count matters more than any other decision: every extra guest adds a meal, a chair and a drink. Cutting the guest list by ten people often saves more than cutting flowers entirely.

Photography is usually the next largest item, and the one couples most often say they wish they had spent more on. Flowers, décor and attire come next. Smaller items like stationery, cake and transport add up quickly, so give them a real number instead of hoping they'll fit.

    Keep a buffer

Set aside about 8 to 10 percent for things you didn't plan for: service charges, extra hours, delivery fees, a last-minute repair. If you don't use it, it pays for the honeymoon.

    Questions

Are these percentages right for my country?

They're a starting point based on common planning guidance. Venue and catering costs vary a lot by city, so check two or three local quotes and adjust the split.

Does the total have to add up to 100%?

Yes. If you raise one category, lower another. The calculator shows you how far off you are.

    Is my budget saved anywhere?

Only in your own browser, so you can come back to it. Nobody else can see it.
